How the Health Information Management Program Finder Works

You don’t need to know which school you want yet. Tell the program finder what you want from the degree and it does the comparing for you.

  1. You Answer Six Questions

Your degree level, online or campus, where you live, the job you picture, what matters most and anything else worth knowing.

  2. We Read 312 Programs

The program finder keeps the programs at your level and in your format, then reads each one’s accreditation record and our editors’ notes against your answers.

  3. You Get Five Matches

Each match shows a match percentage, published in-state tuition where we have it, and a link to its card in our state rankings.

Which Health Information Management Degree Fits the Job You Want?

Medical Coding

The CCA only asks for a high school diploma, so a degree isn’t what gets you in the door. What an associate program adds is the RHIT, a broader credential that covers coding and the rest of the health record. 276 of the 312 programs in our data point toward coding work. Start with our affordable online RHIT programs and the medical coder career guide.

Health Informatics and Data Analytics

Data jobs in healthcare tend to sit at the master’s level. 34 of the 48 master’s programs in our finder are health informatics degrees, and 114 programs overall point toward informatics and data work. Know the trade-off: a health informatics master’s isn’t automatically RHIA-eligible. Our HIM vs health informatics guide lays out both paths.

HIM Director or Manager

The RHIA is AHIMA’s credential for HIM management, and you need a CAHIIM-accredited bachelor’s or master’s in HIM to sit for it. 240 programs in our data point toward HIM leadership. Already have your RHIT? Our RHIT to RHIA rankings list bachelor’s programs for working technicians, and the HIM director guide covers the job.

Privacy and Compliance

Privacy work rewards experience as much as a degree. AHIMA’s CHPS credential accepts several mixes of the two, from an associate degree plus four years to a bachelor’s plus two. Most HIM programs teach privacy and security, and 296 programs in our data point toward that work. Our CHPS certification guide lists every eligibility route.
