Pittsburgh is functionally a two-system town, and both systems are enormous. UPMC is the largest non-governmental employer in Pennsylvania, running more than 40 hospitals from its Oakland base, and Allegheny Health Network (backed by Highmark Health) operates the other half of the market. Between the two, plus Highmark itself on the payer side, the region carries an unusually deep bench of medical records, coding, revenue-cycle, and release-of-information jobs for a metro its size.

That payer-provider concentration matters for HIM careers specifically: UPMC and Highmark both run large health-plan operations, so coding and data-quality work exists on the insurance side too, not just in hospitals. Add the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and a dense cluster of specialty and community hospitals, and an RHIT or RHIA credential travels well here without relocating.
